Safety first
Short answer
Listen first: turn the key on, select forward and press the pedal. A distinct click means the low-current control circuit is working and suspicion moves to the solenoid's high-current contacts, the controller, the motor or the drivetrain. No click means the control circuit is not completing — check the interlocks, key switch, throttle sensor and micro switch. A solenoid can click and still be faulty, because clicking only proves the coil pulls in, not that the contacts still pass current.
The solenoid is the heavy relay that connects the battery pack to the motor circuit. A small current through its coil pulls in a large contact. That two-part design is exactly why "does it click?" is such a useful question: the click tells you the small side works, and says nothing about the large side.
Before you start
This is a high-current DC circuit. Treat it with the respect you would give mains wiring.
- Key off, tow/run switch in tow, charger unplugged.
- Eye protection. Remove rings and watches. Work with one hand where you can.
- Controllers hold a charge in their capacitors after isolation. Treat controller terminals as live even when the cart is off.
- Do not bridge the two large solenoid terminals to "test" it. That connects the pack directly to the motor with no speed control and no interlock. The cart can launch at full power with nobody positioned to stop it, and the arc at the terminals is capable of causing serious burns. It also destroys the evidence a technician needs.
If the cart must be raised so the drive wheels can turn, use rated jack stands on level ground, chock the wheels that stay down, and keep everyone clear of the wheels before anyone touches the pedal.
Step 1: the listening test
Sit in the cart. Key on, forward selected, foot on the pedal. Listen for a single distinct click from the solenoid.

This single observation splits the problem roughly in half and is the most useful thing you can tell a technician.
Step 2: rule out the free things first
Before suspecting the solenoid at all, check the things that stop the control circuit for entirely mundane reasons:
- Tow/run switch left in tow — extremely common after charging or storage.
- Forward/reverse selector sitting between positions.
- Seat or pedal switch, on carts fitted with one.
- Parking brake not fully released.
- Charger still plugged in — most carts inhibit drive while connected.
Step 3: check the small terminals (the coil side)
The solenoid has two small terminals for the coil and two large ones for the main current.
With the meter on DC volts, measure across the two small terminals while a helper presses the pedal with the key on and forward selected.
- You see roughly the control voltage appear (this is often pack voltage, but some carts use a lower control voltage — check your model's wiring diagram): the control circuit is delivering. If it is not clicking with voltage present, the coil is likely open or seized.
- You see nothing: the fault is upstream — interlocks, key switch, throttle sensor, micro switch, or a broken wire. The solenoid is not your problem.
You can also check the coil itself with the meter on resistance, pack disconnected: an open circuit reading means a failed coil. Do not compare the reading against a number from the internet — coil resistance varies between models, so use the figure in the manufacturer's documentation for your cart or compare against a known-good identical part.
Step 4: check the large terminals (the contact side)
This is where a solenoid that clicks can still be the culprit.
With the pack connected, the cart safely supported, everyone clear of the wheels, and the meter on DC volts, measure across the two large terminals while the solenoid is energised.
- Close to zero volts across them: the contacts are closing properly. Current is passing. Look further down the circuit.
- Most of pack voltage still across them while it is clicked in: the contacts are not making. They are burnt, pitted or welded open. That is a failed solenoid even though it sounds healthy.
Measuring across the closed contacts like this is the safe way round. It does not require you to bridge anything.
Common mistakes

When to stop and call a professional
- No click, and every interlock checks out.
- A click, but no movement, and you are not confident measuring across live high-current terminals.
- Any mechanical noise from the transaxle.
- Any suspicion of a controller fault — it is diagnosed by elimination and is the most expensive thing to guess wrong.
- Any point at which the next step would be bypassing a safety device. That is the signal to hand over, not to push on.
What to tell the provider
- Make, model, year, pack voltage.
- Whether the solenoid clicks — and if so, once, or chattering.
- What you measured across the small terminals, and across the large ones.
- Whether accessories, lights and horn work normally.
- Whether the wheels turn freely by hand.
