Safety first
Climbing is the hardest thing you ask a golf cart to do. A pack, motor, or engine that is merely tired will usually cope on level ground and only reveal itself on a slope, which is why "it's fine until the hill" is such a common description.
Before you start
If any step requires the cart to be raised, use rated jack stands on level ground — never a jack alone, never blocks or bricks. Chock the wheels that stay on the ground. If you don't have proper stands, do the checks that don't need them and leave the rest to a shop.
Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of the drivetrain, and put the tow/run switch in tow before working near the motor.
Rule out the easy things first
- Tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres add a surprising amount of drag. Check all four against the sidewall or the manufacturer's figure.
- Dragging brakes. Jack one wheel at a time and spin it by hand. It should turn freely and coast. A wheel that stops immediately, or a hub that is hot after a drive, points at a seized or maladjusted brake.
- Load and gradient. Four adults on a long incline is a genuinely different demand than two on the flat. Compare like with like before assuming a fault.
Electric carts: pack under load is the key measurement
A pack can read close to full voltage at rest and still collapse the moment it's asked for current. Resting voltage on its own tells you very little.
The measurement that matters is pack voltage while the cart is climbing or otherwise under real load. A large drop — the pack sagging well below its nominal figure and recovering as soon as you lift off — points at the pack or its connections rather than the motor or controller.
This measurement involves probing a live high-current circuit on a moving vehicle, which is a two-person job with the right leads and a real risk of shorting something expensive. If that isn't work you're set up to do safely, this is the right point to hand over to a provider. Most shops can do it in minutes with a clamp meter and a load tester.
Other electric-side causes worth knowing about:
- One weak battery. In a series pack, the weakest battery sets the ceiling. A single failing battery produces exactly this symptom.
- Corroded or loose interconnects. Resistance you cannot see at rest becomes significant heat and voltage loss under load. Warm cable ends after a drive are a strong clue.
- Solenoid or controller cutback. Controllers reduce power when they detect overheating or over-current. A cart that fades progressively on a long climb and returns after cooling is often thermal cutback rather than a dead part.
- Motor brushes (older series-wound motors). Worn brushes reduce torque most visibly under load.
Gas carts
- Clutches. A worn drive or driven clutch, or a stretched belt, slips under load and produces high revs with poor progress. This is one of the most common causes on gas carts and is often mistaken for an engine problem.
- Fuel delivery. A partially blocked fuel filter or a failing pump can supply enough for idle and level running but not for a sustained climb.
- Air filter. Restricted intake shows up first at wide-open throttle.
- Compression. An engine down on compression pulls acceptably on the flat and not at all on a slope.
Telling them apart
A rough but useful discriminator on an electric cart:
- Power fades gradually over a long climb and recovers after a rest → thermal cutback or a tired pack.
- Power drops immediately and sharply the moment load rises → connection resistance or a specific failing battery.
- Cart is slow everywhere, not only on hills → motor, controller, or significant mechanical drag.
These are indications, not diagnoses. Confirm with measurement before buying parts — a pack, a controller, and a motor are all expensive things to replace speculatively.
When to get professional help
- Anything that requires measuring a live pack under load and you aren't equipped for it.
- Burning smells, hot cables, or scorched connectors — stop driving the cart.
- Suspected controller or motor faults. Both need instrumentation to confirm, and both are costly to guess at.
- Any brake work. Brakes are not a component to experiment with on a vehicle that carries passengers.
What to tell the provider
- Make, model, year, and pack voltage or engine size.
- Whether the problem is constant or only under load.
- Whether it worsens as the drive goes on, and whether rest restores it.
- Pack age, or engine hours.
- Any resting and under-load voltages you were able to measure safely.
