Cart has power but won't move

Lights work, the horn sounds, but pressing the pedal does nothing. A structured way to narrow it down to the switches, solenoid, controller, or drivetrain.

When accessories work but the cart won't drive, the pack is generally fine. The fault is somewhere in the chain that turns "pedal pressed" into "current to the motor": the safety interlocks, the throttle sensor, the solenoid, the controller, or the drivetrain itself.

Before you start

Put the tow/run switch in tow and turn the key off before touching anything in the motor or controller area. Controllers hold a charge in their capacitors after isolation — treat their terminals as live even when the cart is off.

If the cart needs to be raised so the drive wheels can turn, use rated jack stands on level ground and chock the wheels that stay down. A cart that unexpectedly drives itself off a jack is a serious hazard, so keep everyone clear of the wheels before anyone touches the pedal.

1. Check the obvious interlocks

These account for a large share of "won't move" calls, and all of them are free to check:

  • Tow/run switch left in tow. Extremely common after charging or storage.
  • Forward/reverse selector sitting between positions rather than fully engaged.
  • Seat or pedal switch on carts fitted with one.
  • Parking brake not fully released.
  • Charger still plugged in. Most carts inhibit drive while connected, and some inhibit it if the receptacle interlock is stuck.

2. Listen for the solenoid

Turn the key on, select forward, and press the pedal. Listen for a distinct click from the solenoid.

  • A click means the low-current control side is working. Suspicion moves to the solenoid's high-current contacts, the controller, the motor, or the drivetrain.
  • No click means the control circuit isn't completing. Suspicion moves to the interlocks above, the key switch, the throttle sensor, the micro switch, or the controller's low-voltage side.

This one observation splits the problem roughly in half and is the single most useful thing to report to a technician.

3. Check the drivetrain is actually connected

With the drive wheels safely raised and supported, try turning one by hand.

  • Both wheels spin very freely, with no resistance from the motor, and there is no motor noise when you press the pedal → the fault is electrical.
  • You hear the motor run but the wheels don't turn → the problem is mechanical: the differential, an axle, or the coupling between motor and transaxle.
  • A grinding or crunching noise → stop. Continuing to try will make an expensive repair worse.

4. Where it usually is from here

Beyond this point, diagnosis needs a multimeter, the wiring diagram for your specific model, and often the manufacturer's diagnostic tool. The realistic candidates are:

  • Throttle sensor (ITS/MCOR). A very common wear item, and one that frequently fails in exactly this way.
  • Solenoid contacts. They click but no longer pass current — burnt or welded.
  • Key switch or micro switch. Usually worn contacts rather than a dead part.
  • Controller. Possible, but it is diagnosed by elimination and is the most expensive assumption to get wrong.
  • Motor. Open windings or worn brushes.

Things worth being explicit about

Do not bypass the solenoid, the interlocks, or the controller to "test" whether the cart will move. Jumping a solenoid connects the pack directly to the motor with no speed control and no safety interlock. The cart can launch at full power with nobody in a position to stop it, and the arc at the terminals is capable of causing serious burns. It also destroys the evidence a technician needs.

Equally, don't leave a cart raised for an extended diagnosis. Get it down, or get it to someone with a lift.

When to get professional help

  • No solenoid click and the interlocks all check out.
  • A click but no movement.
  • Any mechanical noise from the transaxle.
  • Any suspicion of a controller or motor fault.
  • Any point at which the next step would be bypassing a safety device — that's the signal to hand it over, not to push on.

What to tell the provider

  • Make, model, year, and pack voltage.
  • Whether the solenoid clicks.
  • Whether accessories, lights, and horn work normally.
  • Whether the wheels turn freely by hand.
  • Any noise, smell, or warning light, and what changed just before it started.
