Safety first
Short answer
Follow your manufacturer's service schedule where you have it — intervals differ by model and by how hard the cart works. Where you do not, a workable owner routine is: tyre pressures and a visual check monthly; on flooded lead-acid packs, check water monthly and top up after charging; brakes and steering checked seasonally; and a professional service before and after your busiest season. Charge an electric cart after use rather than leaving it sitting partly discharged.
Most golf cart repair bills are not caused by a component that failed unexpectedly. They are caused by a pack that was run flat and left, a brake that was never adjusted, or a belt that was allowed to glaze. Maintenance is unglamorous and it is where the money is.
Start with your manufacturer's schedule
Service intervals genuinely differ between makes, models and model years, and between a cart doing two miles a week around a community and one working eight hours a day at a resort. Where you have the owner's manual for your specific model, its schedule wins over anything general.
Where you do not, the routine below is a reasonable default. Treat it as a starting point to adjust once you see how your cart behaves, not as a specification.
Every month
All carts
- Tyre pressures. Check against the sidewall or the manufacturer's figure. Under-inflation is the single most common cause of "it feels sluggish" and it wears tyres unevenly.
- Walk-round. Look for anything hanging, leaking, cracked or missing. Check that lights work if fitted.
- Free rolling. With the cart safely stationary on level ground, does it roll freely when pushed? A wheel that resists, or a hub that is hot after a drive, points at a dragging brake.
Electric carts, flooded lead-acid packs
- Water level. Check every cell. Top up with distilled or de-ionised water only, and do it after charging — Trojan specifies filling at the end of the charge cycle, to 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom of the vent well. See the battery watering guide for the detail and the reasoning.
- Terminals. White or blue-green crust is corrosion. Clean with the pack disconnected and re-torque to the manufacturer's figure — Trojan warns that overtightening can cause post breakage, post meltdown or fire.
Electric carts, lithium packs
- Nothing to water. Keep the pack and its ventilation clear of debris, and note any behaviour where the cart shuts down unexpectedly — that is usually the BMS protecting the pack and it is worth investigating rather than ignoring.
Every few months, or seasonally
- Brakes. Pedal feel, free play, and whether the parking brake actually holds on a slope. Adjustment is routine; anything beyond adjustment is not an owner job.
- Steering. Play at the wheel, and knocking over bumps.
- Battery capacity check. On an electric cart, measure each battery individually after a full charge and a rest — see testing batteries with a multimeter. Recording the numbers over time tells you far more than any single reading.
- Gas carts: belt and clutch. Look for glazing, cracking and fraying. High revs with poor progress on hills is the classic symptom of a worn belt or clutch.
- Gas carts: air filter, oil, plug. Follow the engine manufacturer's intervals.
Charging habits that decide how long a pack lasts
For lead-acid packs, this is most of the game:
- Charge after use, rather than leaving the pack sitting partly discharged. Sulphation begins in a discharged battery and it is not fully reversible.
- Let the charger finish. Interrupting cycles repeatedly leaves the pack chronically undercharged.
- Do not leave a pack flat over winter. Trojan's storage guidance is to give a freshening charge when battery voltage drops below 12.4 V for a 12 V battery, or 6.2 V for a 6 V battery.
- Replace as a matched set. A new battery in an old pack is dragged down to the level of the rest, and you have effectively wasted the difference.
Before and after your busiest season
Worth a professional service, particularly on a cart that carries passengers:
- Brake inspection and adjustment
- Pack load test rather than a resting-voltage check
- Charger behaviour verified through a full cycle
- Connections checked for heat damage and re-torqued
- Suspension and steering play assessed
- Gas carts: full engine service
Storage
- Clean and dry the cart first — trapped debris holds moisture.
- Electric: charge fully, then check and freshen through the storage period rather than leaving the pack to drift down.
- Gas: follow the engine manufacturer's guidance on fuel stabiliser and whether to store with a full or empty tank. Manufacturers differ, so do not guess.
- Tyres: keep them inflated, and move the cart occasionally if you can.
What is not an owner job
Being honest about this saves money and injuries:
- Brake repair beyond adjustment. Brakes stop a vehicle carrying passengers.
- Anything requiring the cart to be supported for a sustained period.
- Controller or motor diagnosis — done by elimination, expensive to guess.
- Lithium pack work beyond keeping it clean.
- Bringing a deeply discharged pack back up. Generic power supplies and automotive chargers destroy packs and start fires.
When to call someone
- Burning smells, hot cables, or scorched connectors — stop using the cart.
- A battery that is swollen, cracked, hot or leaking.
- The pack needs watering far more often than it used to, which often means the charger is overcharging.
- Braking that has changed in any way.
- Any grinding or crunching from the drivetrain.
