Watering golf cart batteries: distilled water, levels and timing

When to add water, how much, and why doing it before charging instead of after causes the mess you are trying to avoid.

Short answer

Use distilled or de-ionised water only, and add it at the END of the charge cycle — not before. Trojan Battery specifies filling to 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom of the vent well on a fully charged battery. The one exception: if the plates are exposed to air, add just enough water to cover them before you charge.

Flooded lead-acid batteries lose water every time they are charged. Replacing it is the single cheapest thing you can do to make a pack last, and it is also the job most often done at the wrong moment, with the wrong water, to the wrong level.

This guide covers flooded (wet) lead-acid batteries — the type with removable caps you can open. If your batteries are sealed AGM or lithium, they are not watered at all, and prising a cap off a sealed battery ruins it.

Before you start

A golf cart pack stores a very large amount of energy even when the cart seems dead. Battery acid burns skin and destroys clothing, and a charging flooded battery vents hydrogen, which is explosive.

  • Wear eye protection and gloves.
  • No smoking, no flames, no sparks near the pack.
  • Turn the key off and set the tow/run switch to tow.
  • Work with one hand where you can, and remove rings and watches — a metal band bridging two terminals is one of the most common serious injuries around battery packs.
  • Keep baking soda and water nearby to neutralise a spill.

Use distilled water, and only water

Trojan's guidance is direct: avoid mineral-rich water, and use distilled or de-ionised water only. Tap water carries dissolved minerals that plate out onto the battery's internals and permanently reduce capacity.

Never add acid to a battery. The acid does not evaporate — only the water does. Adding acid raises the electrolyte's concentration beyond specification and damages the plates.

Water after charging, not before

This is the step people get backwards, and it is the reason so many owners end up with acid on the tray.

The electrolyte level rises during charging. Filling a battery to the correct level before a charge means the extra volume has nowhere to go once the charge pushes the level up, so it overflows through the vent — taking acid with it. You then lose electrolyte you cannot replace with water, and you have corrosion to clean up.

Trojan's instruction is to water at the end of the charge cycle.

The one exception: if the plates are already exposed to air, add just enough water to cover them before starting the charge. Plates exposed to air are the one thing worse than an overflow — Trojan warns that if the electrolyte level drops below the tops of the plates, irreparable damage may occur.

How much water

For a fully charged standard deep-cycle battery, Trojan specifies filling to 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom of the vent well — the plastic tube that extends down inside the fill hole.

Do not fill to the top of the cap. Overfilling causes exactly the acid overflow described above.

If you cannot see the level clearly, a torch held at an angle usually shows the meniscus. Single-point watering systems fill every cell to a fixed level in one go and remove the guesswork; they are worth considering on a fleet or on any pack you find awkward to reach.

How often

There is no universal interval, because water loss depends on how much the pack is charged, how hot it gets, and how the charger behaves at the end of a cycle. A pack cycled daily in summer heat needs checking far more often than one used at weekends.

Check monthly to begin with, note how much water each cell actually took, and adjust from there. A cell that consistently takes noticeably more water than its neighbours is worth mentioning to a technician — it can indicate the charger is overcharging, or that the battery is on its way out.

New batteries are usually the exception: check them but expect to add little, because water consumption tends to rise as a pack ages.

While the caps are off

It is an efficient moment to check three other things:

  • Terminals. White or blue-green crust is corrosion. Clean it with the pack disconnected, then re-torque.
  • Torque. Trojan's warning here is unusually blunt: do not overtighten terminals, because doing so can result in post breakage, post meltdown, or fire. Use the figure in your battery manufacturer's documentation rather than a guess.
  • Cases. Swelling, cracks or leaks mean stop and call someone.

When to stop and call a professional

  • A case is swollen, cracked, hot, or leaking.
  • You smell rotten eggs — a flooded pack venting. Ventilate, keep ignition sources away, and do not charge it again until someone has looked at it.
  • One cell repeatedly needs far more water than the rest.
  • Terminals or cable ends show heat damage.
  • The pack needs watering far more often than it used to, which often means the charger is overcharging it.

Watering is genuinely an owner-level job. Diagnosing why a pack is drinking water is not.
