Lithium battery conversion

Find a provider to convert a lead-acid cart to lithium — including the charger, BMS, mounting and wiring work the batteries alone do not cover.

What this covers

  • Assessing whether your cart and controller suit a lithium pack at all

  • Controller voltage tolerance against the pack's real operating range
  • Physical fit, and what the tray needs to restrain a much smaller pack
  • Existing cable sizing and fuse ratings
  • How the cart is used, since short occasional trips rarely justify the price difference
  • Warranty and community or insurance implications

Mobile or shop?

Mobile

Some experienced mobile providers do conversions on site, but many do not.

Shop

Usually shop work. It involves mechanical adaptation, electrical review and a commissioning step.

What to have ready

Having these to hand makes the first conversation shorter and usually cheaper.

  • Make, model, year and current pack voltage
  • Controller make and model if you know it
  • How you actually use the cart — distance, terrain, load, frequency
  • Whether the existing charger is on-board or portable
  • Any community rules about modified vehicles

Safety first

Lithium cells store a great deal of energy in a small package. A short circuit during installation can deliver hundreds of amps. Incorrect BMS configuration, an unsuitable charger, mechanical damage during fitting, or a pack that is not properly restrained can all lead to thermal runaway — a fire that is difficult to extinguish and produces toxic smoke. We do not publish a step-by-step conversion procedure for this reason.

Work it out yourself first
