Electric golf cart won't charge

Work through the most common reasons a charger won't start or won't finish, from the wall outlet to the pack itself — and know when to stop and call a professional.

A cart that won't charge is usually one of four things: no power reaching the charger, a charger that won't handshake with the pack, a pack whose voltage has fallen too low for the charger to recognise, or a connection problem between the two. Working through them in order avoids replacing parts that were never faulty.

Before you start

A golf cart battery pack stores a very large amount of energy even when the cart seems "dead". A dropped wrench across two terminals can vaporise metal and cause serious burns. Work with one hand where you can, remove rings and watches, wear eye protection, and keep the key off and the tow/run switch in tow while you are near the pack.

If your cart has a lithium pack, most diagnosis beyond the checks below belongs with someone who has the manufacturer's tooling. Lithium packs are managed by a battery management system (BMS) that can disconnect the pack for reasons you cannot see from outside, and forcing charge into a pack the BMS has isolated is genuinely dangerous.

1. Confirm the outlet actually has power

Plug something you know works — a lamp, a phone charger — into the same outlet. Outdoor and garage circuits are frequently on a GFCI that has tripped, sometimes at a different outlet entirely, and a tripped breaker is by far the most common "my charger is dead" cause.

Check the extension cord too, if you use one. A long, thin cord can drop enough voltage that a charger refuses to start.

2. Look at what the charger is telling you

Most chargers signal their state with lights or a display. Note the exact pattern before you change anything — it is the single most useful piece of information a technician can be given.

  • No lights at all — the charger isn't getting mains power, or its internal fuse has failed.
  • Lights, but it never starts — the charger is powered but isn't seeing a pack it recognises.
  • Starts, then stops after a few seconds or minutes — often a pack fault, a bad connection, or a thermal cutback.
  • Runs continuously and never finishes — often one weak cell or battery dragging the pack down.

3. Check the charge connection

Unplug the charger from the cart. Look inside both the plug and the cart receptacle for corrosion, melted plastic, or pins that have pushed back into the housing. Discoloured or melted pins mean the connection has been running hot and should be replaced before you charge again, not after.

Reseat the plug firmly. A partially seated plug is a very common cause of charging that starts and then stops.

4. Measure pack voltage

With a multimeter set to DC volts, measure across the main pack terminals. What you are looking for:

  • A 36 V pack should read roughly 36–39 V when rested and reasonably charged.
  • A 48 V pack should read roughly 48–52 V.
  • Well below the nominal figure means the pack is deeply discharged.

Many chargers will not turn on at all if pack voltage has fallen below a threshold — they cannot tell a flat pack from no pack. This is the point at which a lot of owners conclude the charger is broken when it isn't.

Do not attempt to "jump" or bulk-charge a deeply discharged pack with a generic power supply or an automotive charger. That is how packs are destroyed and how fires start. A shop with the correct equipment can bring a pack back up safely, or determine that it is beyond recovery.

5. Check individual batteries (lead-acid packs)

On a lead-acid pack, measure each battery in turn. Batteries in a pack age together, so one reading noticeably below the others usually indicates the battery that is holding the whole pack back.

While you are there, look for:

  • Corrosion on terminals, particularly white or blue-green crust.
  • Cable ends that are loose, or that turn when you touch them.
  • Cases that are swollen, cracked, or leaking.
  • Low electrolyte in flooded batteries.

Clean corrosion with the cart isolated and the pack disconnected, and re-torque terminals to the manufacturer's specification — over-tightening cracks posts, under-tightening causes the heat damage you saw in step 3.

When to stop and get professional help

Contact a repair provider rather than continuing if:

  • The pack is lithium and the checks above didn't resolve it.
  • Any battery is swollen, cracked, hot, or leaking.
  • You found melted or scorched connectors anywhere in the charge path.
  • Pack voltage is far below nominal and the charger won't engage.
  • You smell rotten eggs (a flooded lead-acid pack venting) — ventilate the area and keep ignition sources away.
  • You are not confident working around high-current DC circuits. That is a completely reasonable place to draw the line.

What to tell the provider

Having these ready makes the visit shorter and usually cheaper:

  • Cart make, model, and year.
  • Pack voltage (36 V or 48 V) and battery type.
  • The exact charger light or display behaviour.
  • Your measured pack voltage, and individual readings if you took them.
  • Roughly how old the pack is, and whether anything changed before the fault.
