Golf cart brakes, steering and suspension

Find a provider for brake service, steering play, suspension work, and lift kit fitting and alignment.

What this covers

  • Brake shoes, drums, cables and adjustment
  • Parking brake adjustment and repair
  • Steering play, tie rods, king pins and bushings
  • Shocks, leaf springs and general suspension
  • Lift kit fitting, and the alignment and geometry work that should follow it

Symptoms that lead here

  • The pedal feels soft, long, or goes to the floor
  • The cart pulls to one side when braking
  • A wheel will not spin freely, or a hub is hot after a drive
  • Steering feels vague or knocks over bumps
  • The parking brake will not hold on a slope
  • It handles badly since a lift was fitted

What a provider is likely to check

  • Whether each wheel rolls freely and coasts
  • Shoe and drum condition, and cable free play
  • Parking brake engagement and holding on a slope
  • Play in tie rods, king pins and bushings
  • Ride height and geometry, particularly after a lift

This describes how the work is usually approached. It is not a specification of what any individual provider will do — agree the scope with them directly.

Mobile or shop?

Mobile

Adjustment and cable work are often practical on site.

Shop

Anything needing the cart raised for a sustained period, and most lift kit work, is shop work.

What to have ready

Having these to hand makes the first conversation shorter and usually cheaper.

  • Make, model and year
  • Whether a lift kit or non-standard tyres are fitted, and when
  • What the fault feels like from the driver's seat
  • Whether it is getting worse, and how quickly

Safety first

Brakes are the system that stops a vehicle carrying passengers, often on slopes and near pedestrians. We do not publish brake repair procedures. A cart must be supported on rated jack stands on level ground before anyone works underneath it — a jack is a lifting device, not a supporting one.

Work it out yourself first

You will get a better answer from a provider if you can describe the fault precisely. These guides help you do that — and some of them will save you the call entirely.
